Charity Cheque Presentation 2009

The chosen charity for 2009 was the Oncology Department at the Nottingham City Hospital in memory of Karen, Garry Slade's wife, who died during August 2008. The amount raised during the year was £2,100.

The Oncology Department at City Campus is committed to providing the highest standard of care to both patients and carers, and is currently undergoing a significant amount of change to achieve its vision of being the best. They are very aware that patients who are referred to oncology have already had a traumatic experience, having been diagnosed with cancer, and they are fortunate to have a highly experienced team of clinicians and supporting staff to be there at all stages of treatment. The Oncology Department provides treatments in the form of chemotherapy and radiotherapy for all kinds of cancer, working with other key staff such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians, pharmacists etc. At City Campus there are three inpatient wards with a total of 48 beds, for emergency and planned admissions. The outpatient department currently sees 4,300 new patients, 25,000 follow-up patients and treats approximately 10,000 day cases in the chemotherapy units each year. The radiotherapy department provides 112,000 exposures each year.

History

During the late 1960's a small band of members would meet early on a Sunday morning for a series of friendly fourballs, and it was from this early beginning with many more members becoming involved, that one of the most acclaimed local golf charitable bodies came into existence.

So the "Scrubbers" was formed in 1968 at the suggestion of Maurice Youngs, the then Professional, and very shortly they had elected a President and Chief Stirrer. His original idea was to set up a means by which new members could be integrated more easily into the Club. The Scrubbers have met, as often as possible on the first Sunday of each month, to play a round of golf and have a "get-together afterwards. Money is collected by the Stirrer, wielding a plastic chamber-pot, as fines for misdemeanors during the preceding period, all "donations" going to a charity chosen for that year by the officials.

The President and Chief Stirrer for the ensuing year are elected at a dinner, held at the clubhouse in the November, and only attended by past officials. Those "selected" for the honour are "informed" at a special Christmas Scrubbers' meeting normally held on the third Sunday in December.

The Scrubbers have their own "Stag" played for each year. This magnificent trophy was presented to them by Ernest Duff-Lister who was the Scrubbers' President in 1977. Two other trophies have been donated to the Scrubbers being The Scrubbers' Cup which was originally presented to the Nottingham Branch of the handle Bar Club in 1965 (by Mr. & Mrs. C.F. Elvin). After the closure of the club the cup was given to the Scrubbers by Larry Bednall to be played for on the Past Officials' Annual Golf Day. The Stirrers' Pot was donated to the Scrubbers in memory of Peter Sheppard who was Chief Stirrer in 1995. It is awarded to the member who has given the most outstanding support during the previous year.

The Scrubbers' tradition of "bacon rolls at the ninth" began towards the end of 1991.
